I didn't modify anything. This an excerpt from 'cairo' 'configure' screen
output:

"

checking for cairo's PDF surface backend feature...

The command line simply was:

./configure --prefix=/mnt/sdb8/sergei/AFSWD_debug/install/cairo-1.8.6
.
