My software has to run on Gnome and CDE from a Sun desktop or through Exceed/Citrix on Windows. Some of the panels are accounted for when requesting screen size, but some are not. I gave up and made the maximized geometry configurable by the user. If the user adds panels or changes screen resolution, the user needs to change the configuration.
