I changed from gtk_labels to gtk_entries instead and cpu usage drops to near zero now. Took me a while to figure out how the hell to get the entry's background to change so that it essentially disappeared (and displays looking exactly like a label). so as of now my problem is solved by a hack around a problem INSIDE of GTK+. It doesn't render quite right in WinXP however.
