I downloaded all of the pertinent tarballs: glib, atk, pango, cairo, and gtk. I installed all the prerequisites, but when I ran configure for gtk, it said "checking for pango flags...package pango not found". However, `pkg-config --modversion pango` returns 1.14.3 just like it should. Furthermore, applications like The Gimp began to fail as if it couldn't link properly at run time. I had to uninstall the new version of pango and reinstall the packaged version (1.8) that came with my distro, Slackware 10.1.
I have run into problems similar to this in the past, and have taken up running configure with the parameter `prefix=/usr` to keep things from being installed in /usr/local. This did not seem to help in this case.
Any ideas?
