The ABI for GTK+ changed with version 2.10 for pixbufs (you will get the result you describe if you try to use gnome compiled against GTK+ version 2.8 with version 2.10). I do not know if that is the cause in you case, but if you have not done so try recompiling your program (and also gnome, if you are using gnome).
