gthread is the 1.0 version developed for glib 1.x and used by the older 1.x versions of gtk. Something must have changed internally between the two versions that creates the segfault, anyway you should always use the 2.0 version with gtk 2.x.

The 2nd version adds recursive mutexes, thread pooling, read write locks, priority settings.
