You are using GtkText. Don't.

The most likely reason that you are using GtkText not GtkTextView is
that you are using GTK+-1.2. Don't do that either: it's been over
3 years since GTK+-2.x was release as stable, and over 4 years since
the last release of GTK+-1.2.
