Umm.. no... the former (the currently executing shell) is *NOT* available in $SHELL in the situation I described, because it had been set to the shell specified in /etc/passwd rather than the currently executing shell. That was the *point* of the posting - $SHELL isn't what you'd naively expect at that point...
