A really good way to learn gtk is to work with the python bindings, pygtk.

There is a good pygtk tutorial for the treeview here:

There are also a whole section on the treeview in the pygtk faq:

Even if you are not using python, this tutorial and faq can be very useful to learn how to do stuff in GTK.
