In a sense, window managers like ratpoison [1] already do this. Ken's sheets and drawers demo works well with ratpoison, by the way: The sheets show up as regular modal dialogs, and the drawers show up as regular nonmodal dialogs. I was a little worried that it wouldn't, because a lot of applications that try to do fancy stuff with window placement, etc., end up being completely unusable in ratpoison. (One of the worst examples is the font editor xmbdfed, which keeps trying to *animate* itself into its preferred size.)
