This looks good except for the version number. You should use the latest stable release which is 1.2.5. There are a couple of important bug-fixes since 1.2.0, perhaps they even fix your problems.

I should have closed this thread long ago, it's about two weeks or more
that I finished installing the new gtk (I finally got v2.2.4). The
reason for the delay was that I was planning to write a lot about the
particulars of what the solution was, but I don't think I can ever get
down to that.

Anyway, I reinstalled my whole system in the meantime, and for the
second time I didn't allow fontconfig-xft (versions 2.2.0 and 2.1.2)to
overwrite any of my system files (I set the DESTDIR variable to a custom
path at installation time to achieve that, and used the package stow
afterwards to link the files to their run-time places). This helped me
in noticing, that some files of Xft1 remained even after installing the
new version, because they caused no name conflict. So I made a big
cleanup, which eventually solved the problem. I consulted the file lists
in /var/lib/dpkg/info to decide what to remove.

I'm not quite sure which files caused the trouble, because I didn't
have the time to check every possible setting. After compiling
everything successfully, another problem appeared, because programs,
depending on Xft1 (like xterm) refused to start. I am still not sure,
what would be the best way to solve this (copying the original binaries
back or installing the Xft1 wrapper(?) in eg. fcpackage-2.1).

Regards,

busmanus
