I found the following to work too:

---------------------------------
PangoFontDescription *pdf;
GtkStyle *style;
.
.
.

style = gtk_style_new();
pdf = pango_font_description_from_string("Sans 9");
style->font_desc = pdf;
gtk_style_attach(style, GDK_WINDOW(window));
