Here is my mouse section from Xfree which I use with gpm

#Touchpad using gpm -Rimps2 -t synps2 -m /dev/mouse
Section "InputDevice"
	Identifier "Mouse0"
	Driver "mouse"
	Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
	Option "Device" "/dev/gpmdata"
	Option "Buttons" "5"
	Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
	Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"
EndSection

This provides the Z axis mapping for the vertical scrolling.
