Thank you for your help with the conflict I had with switching consoles. After a lot of testing, I finally determined that the problem was actually caused by ACPI and agpgart support in the kernel. If I remove agpgart support then I can switch consoles with no problems at all. I completely forgot that I had made that small change to my kernel on the same day as I upgraded to gpm 1.20.0 See why you should never change more than one thing at a time ... and I know better!
