That is interesting, I didn't expect it to be that high either. I also typically use FreeBSD for servers, but due to time constraints ended up going with ubuntu for now. Ironically I was trying to get up and running quickly without compiling, but in the end compiled anyway to get the latest 3.8.0 installed.
For FreeBSD that also begs the question: would it make sense to have a supported/updated port? I see it used to be in the collection a long time ago.

One of the other insights I gained is that I need to be more clear when there are important fixes and security updates in new GnuGk versions, since most participants indicated that they usually skip updates. ;-)
