runnnig make in the background

I may be putting a stupid question here, but does anyone know why I
can't compile gnugk in the background? I mean I run
make optnoshared
and it works fine. but
make optnoshared &
just sits there until I must kill it with
kill -KILL pid

I tried running it with nice or increasing its priority with renice. It
didn't work. Is it gnugk related or make related? I am running Slackware
10.
