Yes, but it did not help. I used gnugk with FreeBSD 4.8 (as mentioned below) and 4.7 with no differences.
I use gnugk binaries for FreeBSD downloaded from gnugk.org and as far as I know PWLib is linked statically to it.

Besides, it's strange that aliases interfaces are not autodetected. What OS are you running? I remember that on Linux boxes it used to work fine. Maybe upgrading PWLib can help...
