When setting the thing up I was running it without specifying a config file, it has a little moan at the begining, but I was not seeing it amongst all the debug information.

It seems that gnugk does most of what might be needed without being told to do so. Once I specified a basic config file it all worked fine.

and make sure you have routed mode enabled (GKRouted=1)

You have something misconfigured - this is a simple setup
