I have been creating statically linked programs on Linux using pwlib and openh323 nearly every day for the past few years without any problems like this. I actually suspect it is a debian problem (I use RedHat or Mandrake). Specifically, I would guess that one of the downstream static libraries (such as openldap or libsasl) is busted.
