  Yes you're right - in proxy mode gnugk will receive data (RTP) packets, will rewrite ip/rtp headers accordingly and will forward packets, but it will never encode/decode data itself, so gnugk cannot be used as a proxy between 2 devices using different codec's.
  Non proxy gk's could be runned in 2 modes routed signaling or direct signaling. Some further explanation on the concepts could be found there:

in other words .. in proxy mode Bandwidth will be consumed on the GK
system .. non proxy mode the GK will only link e164 routing afterwards
data is being transported by endpoint to endpoint ??

i just want to verify this.
