Thanks go to everyone who responded. The prize goes to Andrey for the final solution. After downloading the source again to be safe. Doing a make clean (this was important) then the correct build options I ended up with a working binary. When copied to a second server along with 70MB of pwlib and openh323 stuff (I am sure it cannot need all this), I was once again back in business. I can now just about do Netmeeting to Netmeeting behind a NAT again. (Well I still have to see why one network will call the other but not the other way around.)
So if anybody else wants a copy of the binary and libraries for SuSE 8.1 I am happy to share them.

One more thing: are you sure you have LATEST gnugk? In 2.0.5 LDAP support is off by default... Try to do "make clean" or "rm -rf ./obj_*" to get rid of -lldap and freinds before you compile... ;)ppp ...if it is not a pwlib configure staff involved... any way do "make clean" first.
