There has been some discussion on the gnash mailing list about using "CDraw" the backend which Xara Xtreme uses and is recently released as a Free Software (well it is getting released component by component and CDraw will be the last component to be released).
The benchmark shows good perfomance than Cairo.

But I don't know whether we can also use it for class path (though it is basically a vector rendering engine).
