open a terminal (ctrl+alt+t)
mv /home/john/.local/share/evolution /media/MyChemistry/.
ln -s /media/MyChemistry/evolution /home/john/.local/share/evolution

The last command make a symlink.

I would like to move the data files (e-mails, contacts, etc.) from /home/john/.local/share/evolution/ to /media/MyChemistry/evolution/ .  Reason for wanting to do this is partition with /home/ is getting low on space as data files associated with evolution are larger than 5 GB and it is also the same partition that contains the Ubuntu 12.04 OS and other applications software.  Some authorities have suggested symlinks, but they do not seem to work.  Also, the restore program on evolution put the restored data back on /home/john/.local/share/evolution/ .

Thank you very much.

John
