Let me give you an example. I have a 12 monitor desktop in a 4x3 matrix here. X supports it fine, courtesy of ATI. Do you know what happens when I press the maximize button to view that 12 MPixel image at native resolution? Yes, it maximizes to a *single* monitor! An annoyance to no end. There are other problems stemming from the absence of a proper multi-monitor desktop in Gnome. Applications only start on screen 1, menus are clipped to the size of one screen, etc. etc. Panels are only displayed on screen 1.
