Hi Chad.
your first sentence is a bit confusing. There's no live CD of Gnome. Instead you can have live CDs of open suse or ubuntu or any other linux distro.
Gnome is just the GUI.
You can use open suse for starters, but the most easy going one would be I think Linux Ubuntu Mint. It installs media codecs from the beginning. All you got to do is enjoy using it.
