Thanks Dupuy - that *might* be what I am looking to do.  I say "might", because it is not clear to me where I set these preferences. 

Specifically what I want to do is to open an application off of the menu and it opens at a pre-defined region of the screen (e.g. bottom right).  This is because I run Conky which is in the top left and windows typically open in a way that obscures the Conky display.

I thought that there might be some user-friendly GUI switch, but if not can you give me a steer where these config files are likely to be located so I can alter them.
