I reinstalled kdeutils package. It did not fix the problem. I had previously reinstalled kgpg. When I did that it uninstalled kdeutils. When I reinstalled kgpg, it did not reinstall kdeutils. Now I have both installed but it still won't startup. Then I ran strace as Peter Gordon suggested. Wow! The result is very long. Should I post it all? Can I use an attachment? Because it is so long I will try extract the parts that are not showing errors. Here are a few sections of the strace... The start... 27736 execve("/usr/bin/kgpg", ["kgpg"], [/* 37 vars */]) = 0 27736 brk(0) = 0x9158000 27736 access("/etc/ld.so.nohwcap", F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) 27736 mmap2(NULL, 8192, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0xb8069000 27736 access("/etc/ld.so.preload", R_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) 27736 open("/etc/ld.so.cache", O_RDONLY) = 3 27736 fstat64(3, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=110089, ...}) = 0 27736 mmap2(NULL, 110089, PROT_READ, MAP_PRIVATE, 3, 0) = 0xb804e000 27736 close(3) = 0 27736 access("/etc/ld.so.nohwcap", F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) Over and over again it cannot find "/etc/ld.so.nohwcap", but that seems to be ok since it continues on. Later it starts having lots of trouble finding "dbus-1", "cmov", and several other files. It appears to be looking in several places for them: /lib/tls/i686/ /lib/tls /usr/lib/tls /usr/lib /lib/i486 etc I guess it has to check in several places for certain files, not knowing in advance exactly where they are. It doesn't appear to be particularly bothered because it keeps going until, finally at the end, it seems to die. 27736 gettimeofday({1251636778, 281065}, NULL) = 0 27736 poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}], 1, 25000) = 1 ([{fd=3, revents=POLLIN}]) 27736 read(3, "l\2\1\1\31\0\0\0\4\0\0\0=\0\0\0\6\1s\0\6\0\0\0:1.133\0\0 \5"..., 2048) = 105 27736 read(3, 0x91781e0, 2048) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) 27736 writev(3, [{"l\1\0\1\210\0\0\0\4\0\0\0\177\0\0\0\1\1o\0\25\0\0 \0/org/free"..., 144}, {"\203\0\0\0type='signal',sender='org.fre"..., 136}], 2) = 280 27736 gettimeofday({1251636778, 282152}, NULL) = 0 27736 poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}], 1, 25000) = 1 ([{fd=3, revents=POLLIN}]) 27736 read(3, "l\2\1\1\0\0\0\0\5\0\0\0005\0\0\0\6\1s\0\6\0\0\0:1.133\0\0 \5"..., 2048) = 72 27736 read(3, 0x91781e0, 2048) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) 27736 writev(3, [{"l\1\0\1\21\0\0\0\5\0\0\0\177\0\0\0\1\1o\0\25\0\0 \0/org/free"..., 144}, {"\f\0\0\0org.kde.kgpg\0"..., 17}], 2) = 161 27736 gettimeofday({1251636778, 282759}, NULL) = 0 27736 poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}], 1, 25000) = 1 ([{fd=3, revents=POLLIN}]) 27736 read(3, "l\2\1\1\4\0\0\0\6\0\0\0=\0\0\0\6\1s\0\6\0\0\0:1.133\0\0 \5"..., 2048) = 84 27736 read(3, 0x91781e0, 2048) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) 27736 writev(3, [{"l\1\0\1\21\0\0\0\6\0\0\0\177\0\0\0\1\1o\0\25\0\0 \0/org/free"..., 144}, {"\f\0\0\0org.kde.kgpg\0"..., 17}], 2) = 161 27736 gettimeofday({1251636778, 283446}, NULL) = 0 27736 poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}], 1, 25000) = 1 ([{fd=3, revents=POLLIN}]) 27736 read(3, "l\2\1\1\n\0\0\0\7\0\0\0=\0\0\0\6\1s\0\6\0\0\0:1.133\0\0 \5"..., 2048) = 90 27736 read(3, 0x91781e0, 2048) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) 27736 writev(3, [{"l\1\0\1\0\0\0\0\7\0\0\0{\0\0\0\1\1o\0\20\0\0 \0/MainAppl"..., 144}, {""..., 0}], 2) = 144 27736 gettimeofday({1251636778, 284629}, NULL) = 0 27736 poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}], 1, 25000) = 1 ([{fd=3, revents=POLLIN}]) 27736 read(3, "l\2\1\1\177\v\0\0\25\0\0\0.\0\0\0\6\1s\0\6\0\0\0:1.133\0 \0\5"..., 2048) = 2048 27736 read(3, "<arg type=\"i\" direction=\"out\"/>\n "..., 2048) = 959 27736 writev(3, [{"l\1\0\1'\0\0\0\10\0\0\0\202\0\0\0\1\1o\0\20\0\0 \0/MainAppl"..., 152}, {"\0\0\0\0\37\0\0\0\0\0\0\v/home/clark\0\0\0\1 \377\377\377\377\0\0"..., 39}], 2) = 191 27736 gettimeofday({1251636778, 288939}, NULL) = 0 27736 poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}], 1, 25000) = 1 ([{fd=3, revents=POLLIN}]) 27736 read(3, "l\2\1\1\4\0\0\0\26\0\0\0.\0\0\0\6\1s\0\6\0\0\0:1.133\0\0 \5"..., 2048) = 68 27736 read(3, 0x9187918, 2048) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) 27736 exit_group(0) = ?
