Thanks for your helpful suggestions. Much appreciated. Actually, I stumbled across a solution by accident. I discovered that Applications->Debian->Help->Info brings up a user-mode terminal and I was able to reset the profile back to its original there. At the moment all is working fine. Except for that one, very user-unfriendly glitch, I?m liking gnome just fine.
