Some 2.18 packages are already available in experimental if you don't want to wait for them to be included in etch (we're still waiting for 2.16, aren't we?), and if you want to risk to see something broken in your system. Simply add to your /etc/apt/sources.list: deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ experimental main contrib non-free or whatever works for you.
