You can also achieve this using Devils Pie, although not withoutmanually creating the config files.  See the first three hits ongoogle for devilspie for links to the software and some docs on how touse it.
I also played a little with Beryl and found that in addition to theeye-candy effects it offered, it could also graphically configure manyof these sorts of window/desktop placement tasks.
