mapping commands to keys

On solaris, I can map commands to keys using .Xdefaults
XTerm*VT100*translations:            #override \
        <Key>Home:              string("clear\n") \n\
        <Key>F7:                string("set path=($path /usr/local/bin) ; rehash
\n") \n\

What's nice about this is - it's a single key activation (as opposed to key + <return> or <alt> + key
- it passes the command thru even if I get onto a different OS (linux, aix...)

This doesn't seem to work for me within gnome on linux however I can at
least map "clear" using

gconf-editor -->apps-->metacity-->{keybindings command|global keybindings}

but the "set" command wont work. I'm guessing gnome-editor is probably not the best way to do this. Perhaps I just need to better define the terminal
type within .Xdefaults (its xterm by default). Anyone doing this?

TIA
