Applications Menu (in the top left) -> System tools -> Configuration Editor In there, navigate through to apps -> nautilus -> desktop and there should be an option called "volumes_visible". Untick that and your all set. To get them on your panel, right-click on the panel and select "Add to Panel...". Look through the list for "Disk Mounter".
