i am willing to spend some time on it, but not a whole lot as i have
to travel soon.

ok, patience is due

i have tried the current menu-editor.  i can not see how to get it
to create a new menu which i can add to the panel.  a folder set
in applications:/// was so cool, you could use nautilus file mangler
to nest folders, drag and drop, ...
