Keyboard shortcut to volume control?

I have just installed Slackware 10.1 with Gnome 2.6.1 and when I try to use the
volume control on my keyboard, it brings up the window showing me the volume and
change, but there is no "progress bar" for the volume level and I can't change the
volume level. This worked fine under Slackware 10 (current) and same version of Gnome.
What am I missing?

Regards,

BTJ

"It's even worse than that; play it forwards and it installs Windows"
