I doubt it is patented. It's a feature that's been around for a long
time in various screensavers on various platforms. I had a screensaver
on my Amiga years ago that did this; I've seen it on Windows
screensavers; and I'm sure I've seen it elsewhere, but I can't recall
where.

Most implementations I've seen had one corner for "blank now" and a
different corner for "never blank".
