When we want a panel to appear (in autohide mode), it
appears with a delay that grates on my nerves! I
prefer to avoid autohide mode now, even though I hate
a panel to occupy my screen.

Thankfully you can set this in gconf. open
gconf-editor and navigate to /apps/panel/global

Then change the panel_show_delay to 0

This is tunable via gconf-editor.
Try /apps/panel/global/panel_show_delay, although you
may need to set it in the profiles directory since
global may be read-only.

Cheers,
Ryan
