The consensus always seemed to be that it was too difficult to implement in GNOME, but perhaps recent changes in the way GTK+ manages menus may resolve some of the issues. Aside from 'looking cool' and 'being more like Apple' what do you think the benefits to the user could be? My own concern is that a lot of the accessibility gains in GNOME would be lost by taking a key part of an application out of context - or at least a lot of accessibility code would need to be rewritten.
