You seem to be using GNOME 2.2.  Try the latest release (2.8);
performance improvements are made with each release.

Also, you might consider that it isn't GNOME that's causing certain
slowdowns. You have an NVIDIA card - are you using the latest NVIDIA
binary drivers? The Free 'nv' XFree86/Xorg driver is slow as fashoozie.
(No, I don't know what that is either, but I'm going to assume it's very
slow.)

Other things like the compiler used, compiler options used, file system,
kernel, and so on can all have a huge impact on performance. RH9 is
probably not the fastest distro around at all - old compiler, fairly old
kernel, you're probably using a slower file system (ext2? ext3?), etc.
You might try installing and running GNOME 2.8 on your SUSE 9.1 machine
and compare it with GNOME 2.8 on your RH9 machine.

Also, if you want to actually *help* with the performance issues you
find, you should check out the newly forming performance project in
GNOME. Measures like the ones you list aren't at all useful; profiling
the code and finding the specific parts of the apps that are slowing
things down *does* help, as it helps developers (and possibly yourself,
if you code) fix the performance problems. There definitely are a lot
of areas GNOME could be made much, much faster, but the developers need
to know which code in specific needs fixing, and they could probably use
help doing the actual fixing, as time and resources are limited.
