I have had gnome 2.6 working fine, in fact I have never had a really problem with it. I am using gentoo as my linux distro I recently upgraded to GCC-3.4.4, glib-2.4.5 and gcc-config-1.3.6-r1 (since gnome stop working, but this may be unrelated) Since then I can no longer log into gnome from gdm, gnome either freezes or presents the following message: gnome-setting-daemon has unexcepting quit. So far in attempt to fix the problem I have, 1. reverted back to original versions of gcc-3.3.3, glib-2.4.5 and gcc-config back to the previos versions. 2. tried logging in with a different user 3. tried to find a troubleshooting site for gdm (no luck) I haven't had much success. How ever I was able to find the following in these log files: 1. messages Code: Sep 4 21:34:01 hostname (squareht-2484): starting (version 2.6.2), pid 2484 user 'squareht' Sep 4 21:34:01 hostname (squareht-2484): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory" to a read-only config source at position 0 Sep 4 21:34:01 hostname (squareht-2484): Resolved address "xml:readwrite:/home/squareht/.gconf" to a writable config source at position 1 Sep 4 21:34:01 hostname (squareht-2484): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" to a read-only config source at position 2 Sep 4 21:34:01 hostname (squareht-2490): iid OAFIID:BrokenNoType:20000808 has a NULL type Sep 4 21:34:01 racerx (squareht-2490): invalid character '#' in iid 'OAFIID:This#!!%$iid%^$%_|~!OAFIID_ContainsBadChars' in xsessions-error these are some of the errors that I am seeing Code: (gnome-panel:2763): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libfile.so' (libgcc_s.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) (gnome-panel:2763): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libfile.so' (libgcc_s.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) (gnome-panel:2763): libgnomevfs-CRITICAL **: file gnome-vfs-cancellable-ops.c: line 176 (gnome_vfs_get_file_info_uri_cancellable): assertion `uri != NULL' failed (gnome-panel:2763): libgnomevfs-CRITICAL **: file gnome-vfs-uri.c: line 916 (gnome_vfs_uri_unref): assertion `uri != NULL' failed (gnome-panel:2763): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libfile.so' (libgcc_s.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) (gnome-panel:2763): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libfile.so' (libgcc_s.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) (gnome-panel:2763): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libfile.so' (libgcc_s.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) (gnome-panel:2763): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libfile.so' (libgcc_s.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) (gnome-panel:2763): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libfile.so' (libgcc_s.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) (gnome-panel:2763): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libfile.so' (libgcc_s.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) (gnome-panel:2763): libgnomevfs-CRITICAL **: file gnome-vfs-cancellable-ops.c: line 176 (gnome_vfs_get_file_info_uri_cancellable): assertion `uri != NULL' failed (gnome-panel:2763): libgnomevfs-CRITICAL **: file gnome-vfs-uri.c: line 916 (gnome_vfs_uri_unref): assertion `uri != NULL' failed (gnome-panel:2763): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libfile.so' (libgcc_s.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) (gnome-panel:2763): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libfile.so' (libgcc_s.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) (gnome-panel:2763): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libfile.so' (libgcc_s.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) by the way `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libfile.so' does exist. I have made some progress if you could call it that :-) I tried reinstalling gnome-vfs, and after several attempts I was able to log-in but i couldn't see the background, after many many attempts of recomiling and fiddling one one occasion I launched natilus which restore my background. However this as not fixed the issue completely, because after a reboot, the problem returns, if I recompile gnome-vfs and reboot several more times I can eventually log in and some of the time I can get my background to come up. So right now the machine is not really useable. Any suggested troubleshooting would be appreciated. As I am nowing having to use windows create this message. _______________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Win 1 of 4,000 free domain names from Yahoo!
