it seems to be all of the time, after so long in X. For instance, I can log into X, open gnome-terminal, start gedit so many times, and eventually it starts having that error beforehand. It is slowing down most of my apps, help:( --- On Wed 08/18, Telsa Gwynne < hobbit@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx > wrote: From: Telsa Gwynne [mailto: hobbit@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] To: gnome-list@xxxxxxxxx Date: Wed, 18 Aug 2004 10:27:18 +0100 Subject: Re: Could not open network socket with gnome apps On Tue, Aug 17, 2004 at 12:46:24PM -0400 or thereabouts, John H. wrote:

Does this happen all the time, or only some of the time?
Does it happen after a specific thing you type or click?

Does it happen when you are indeed using a network (ie,
connecting to another computer), or when it is just running
things on your desktop computer? (X actually uses networking
all the time: the computer makes network connections to -itself-,
even if it is not on a network apart from that, which is why
you can get errors about networks when your machine is not
on a network!)

Finally: does this happen when you have been using su,
su -x, sudo, ssh or anything which lets you change which
user you are running as? Sometimes X can be picky about
that, too .
