I know on 2.6, and hopefully 2.0.8, you can remove the home and trash icons by loading gconf, navigating to apps->nautilus->desktop then uncheck home_icon_visible and trash_icon_visible. If it's not in that directory, browse around a bit in GConf and see what you can find.
