Problems with geo-replication for non root user

I was trying to follow the steps for this as mentioned at https://access.redhat.com/solutions/2485621/. One difference is that in my case, the servers are running Ubuntu Server 16.04 LTS and are using gluster 3.12.8 from https://www.gluster.org/.

Passwordless SSH seems to be working for a non-root user from the master node being node1.test.com.
# ssh -24q geouser@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx hostname
node2

Ran through the first few steps fine, but had a failure when trying the pem-file setup on the slave node being node2.test.com.
# gluster system:: execute gsec_create
Common secret pub file present at /var/lib/glusterd/geo-replication/common_secret.pem.pub

# gluster volume geo-replication archives_master geouser@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx::archives_slave create push-pem
Session between archives_master and geouser@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx::archives_slave is already created.
geo-replication command failed

# /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/glusterfs/set_geo_rep_pem_keys.sh geouser archives_master archives_slave
Successfully copied file.
Commit failed on node1.test.com. Error: Unable to end. Error : Success

I'm not sure what to try next.
