I don't know which version of glusterfs you have been using. In case you have been using latest version, you can also explore reset-brick command.

Did this a few months ago, when I had a server die.
Assuming it is a replicated volume, first thing is to remove old brick from
your volume. It has been a while since I had to do this, but I think you
just do a "gluster remove-brick ". It will probably require a 'force'
since the server is gone.
You should be able to install the disk in another server (with gluster
installed).
Then just add that brick to the volume, like you did when setting up the
volume. You will again have to force, because the volume will already have
a volume signature.
After that do a full heal, and wait. It will save a good bit of time that
the files are already on the disk. It should add any files that have been
changed, and then go on its way. You may want to be sure that any files
deleted since the server died don't get put back into the volume. Have had
that happen, but don't remember if this was the combination that triggered
it, or something else.
