Re: Regarding GlusterFS dependency on Linux Kernel Versions

There are key kernel bug fixes and things that significantly help gluster run properly, especially in areas like FUSE and the IO stack.

In general, the more modern the kernel, the better the chance that you have all of those fixes in.

A side note on commercial versions of linux is that the kernel version number (3.10 in the example) is not really indicative of what fixes might have been backported to that kernel. Commercial linux vendors like Red Hat and Suse, etc, all work to chase down the critical issues and get them out even on older kernel versions. Best to check with the vendor in those cases.

Hi Jomy,

From my point of view, GlusterFS resides in userspace and doesn't have a hard-coded kernel module. Thus it would not have a tight dependency on a particular kernel version.

For example, Gluster 3.7 works on both CentOS 7 (Linux 3.10) and Fedora 23 (Linux 4.4).

But still, a clearer comment from RedHat experts is admirable.

Best wishes,

Hello,

We are currently using GlusterFS 3.5.3 on a commercial Linux
distribution (CGL variant) based on 2.6.34 kernel (64 bit).

In fact we are planning to migrate to different Linux distribution and
hence also planning to upgrade the GlusterFS version. In this context I
would like to understand whether GlusterFS has any tight dependency on
Linux kernel versions (for e.g. GlusterFS x.y will work only with some
particular version of Linux Kernel etc.. ??). It would be great if some
expert can give the pointers ..
