Is it safe to remove empty dirs in .glusterfs dir on brick?

I've got several volumes on a three node cluster that have tiny numbers of files (< 1000, some with <100), but at one point had a whole bunch due to bug in local code.

As a result, it appears that these volumes have 50,000+ empty hash directories in the brick that accomplish nothing other than making more work for our backup system. (Note, the entire data set size for the cluster is only about 12-15 GB in around 10-15k files - the OS/hosts take more space than the content we have on the volumes.)

I'm aware of this dir/tree being private/internal, and am not interested in messing with it OTHER than to clear out the empty directories.

Is it safe to remove the empty hash dirs during an idle/maintenance period?
