Hmm. Checking on the dependencies of the glusterfs package, I didn't really notice anything beyond dependencies for Python and Fuse.

However, asking to upgrade them manually fixed this problem

  # apt-get install glusterfs-client glusterfs-common

This installs the following "extra" packages:

The following extra packages will be installed:
    attr liburcu1

and then the install/upgrade proceeds normally.

That's an apt thing. From what I can google, if the dependencies have
changed on one of the packages you have installed so that a new
package must be installed to perform the upgrade then that will be
listed as "kept-back".

That's nice to see, but apparently the new packages are being held
back, preventing an upgrade. Any ideas as to why?

# apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
glusterfs-client glusterfs-common icedtea-7-jre-jamvm
linux-generic
linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic openjdk-7-jre-headless
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 7 not upgraded.
