Your observation is right. Sometime after 3.0 (not sure which exact version, probably 3.1) Gluster introduced POSIX acl support (on the server side). Until then, if fuse let a request through into Gluster, server assumed request to be authenticated - however fuse does not support POSIX acl. Now that auth was introduced on the server side for POSIX acl support, the gid transfet size limit inevitably shows.
