renaming a node

I have a cluster of 51 machines in a gluster cluster. These machines are in people's offices and their home directories are monted via NFS. Therefore, each machine has a lot of unused disk space. So I tied them all together into a gluster dnfs with 3x replication. The problem is when we move a machine, we have to rename it.

I wonder if either using IP addresses or cnames would work better for naming peers? Meanwhile, how do I rename a peer?
