Is it safe to add one brick with data and one empty brick to a 2-node replica set?

If I start out my deployment as a 2-node replica set (later to grow to distributed-replicated), is it safe and proper to add brick #1 with data, and an empty brick #2? Will data be replicated to the empty brick, or am I asking for trouble?

Thanks,
Michael
