how to optimize performance on server side

No, hardware RAID gave us a lot of problems when it came to different versions of the controllers. 
If the controller dies, one can not use the volume any more. Software RAID performance is great. And we can attach the disks to other controllers and still use the raid volume. Since we use Ethernet, thats the bottleneck.
We have SAS and SATA. Recent servers use SAS, older SATA.
